Job expo helps inmates prepare for future outside lockup

STACY KAPLUS was ready.

In the gymnasium on the first floor of Santa Rita county jail Friday, she had her resume, cover letter and business cards. She even had thank-you notes ready to send to the people she would meet.

"I never wanted to do anything," she said. "(Now) I'm doing something for myself."

Kaplus was among hundreds of minimum-security inmates in the Alameda County lockup looking toward a futureon the outside. More than 20 employment recruitment, social and health organizations showed up Friday to give the inmates information on programs and services that can get them jobs, education and health care.

Kaplus, who spent 10 years in the Army, also found out about veterans services for which she may be eligible.

This is the second career-type fair the jail has held, said Alameda County sheriff's Sgt.

Samsung Digimax GX-10 Digital SLR Camera

Can changing the name on a camera save you money? Yes, when you take thePentax K10Dand call it the Samsung GX-10 Digital SLR Camera. The former, with a 27-83mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens sells for $800, more or less, while the latter--virtually identical camera body and same lens--sells for $750. Given the GX-10's features, it's a bargain.

ESPN's New HD Production Shot in Remote Location, on Time and Under ...

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- "The Bronx is Burning", ESPN's new miniseries makes use of an innovative digital workflow design using Technicolor Creative Bridge's Mobile Digital Lab and Theatre (MDLT). This state of the art MDLT houses a Globalstor ExtremeStor DI workstation with the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 SDI by PNY graphics board running ASSIMILATE's SCRATCH Data-Centric Workflow Solution. On location at Sonalysts Studios in Waterford Connecticut, the MDLT gave the production team access to a complete digital "pre-post" pipeline; allowing the production team to establish a new pre-post colorization model. As a result the HD production was much more efficient and the final online color correction was much more cost effective.

"The Bronx is Burning" was shot on location throughout Connecticut, using the Thomson VIPER FilmStream(TM) digital camera.

Care in the community

People stroll arm-in-arm towards the small parade of shops containing the post office, bank and convenience shop. The pretty thoroughfares bear quaint names such as Woodland View and Courtyard Mews.

A former stable block houses a dental clinic and doctor’s surgery. Across the cobbles lie a village hall, bistro and café, their windows filled with glorious floral arrangements.

But the tiny streets of Hesley, a village built in the grounds of a stately home near Doncaster, are curiously quiet. There are no conversations to eavesdrop on, no casual exchanges of gossip between retired residents. In fact, few inhabitants speak at all, beyond grunts, laughs and cries.

Hesley is a purpose-built, privately run community for young adults with severe autism who have been excreted from the school system at 16 and for whom a normal life, either with parents or on their own, is simply not an option.

Dark Sector interview with David Kudirka: no PC version and no movie ...

David Kudirka: First of all, what gives specificity to the game is the use of the Glaive. It is truly a unique weapon. You have to sometimes use it in combination with fire-arms, but you must also use its new capabilities, acquired during the game, in order to create new styles of combat. That changes a lot compared to a simple shooter. And as you advance through the game you'll find more weapons and more ammunition. Moreover, with the Glaive [attached to his body], the hero himself is like a weapon. So he evolves and becomes stronger, which is a very interesting element in a game that wanted to be very open. JF: During the presentation we've seen a lot of intermediary sequences. Their proportion seemed quite important. Just to provoke you a bit, we're just tempted to say if there's any room left for gameplay between two cinematics...
