Foe of pipeline finds plot in lost notebook Notes: 'Ignore negative ...

With several witnesses looking on, including one with a digital camera, Southern Nevada Water Authority staff member Andy Belanger removed the rubber band from the padded notebook and carefully removed its contents.

One by one, each document, map and handwritten note was run through a photocopier and returned to its place in the notebook. When a page was copied incorrectly, the duplicate was shown to the witnesses so they could see what it was before it was torn in half and thrown away.

The process took more than 15 minutes and was executed with the care of election workers or crime scene investigators. Watching from the doorway of the copy room, a water authority official couldn't help but laugh.

"It's not often we have a whodunit," he said.

Jeff Thelen's Blog

So, I go to a movie Saturday night. I have some friends in Waupaca and we always meet in Stevens Point, since that's half way between us. We don't get to see each other as often as we'd like, so we do a lot of catching up. We also like to pretend we're the cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and make fun of what we see on screen, if it's bad. And we're pop culture geeks so we talk about the actors, directors, special effects, etc. On top of that, my cell phone went off. I told the caller I'd call her back.

But all of this happened BEFORE the movie, during the trailers, or previews of the upcoming films. Once the movie started we all hushed up, except for the occasional gasp. (we saw Sweeney Todd, which is really quite gross)

Still, a man sitting directly in front of me turned around at the end of the last trailer and said, "OK, let's keep the comments to ourselves now that the movie is starting." I said "Yea, we planned on it once the movie started." After hearing the exchange, the group behind us (all adults) actually made several comments about the movie during the movie.

Years of Observing Combined Into NASA's Best-Yet Look at Mars Canyon

A new view of the biggest canyon in the solar system, merging hundreds of photos from NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter, offers scientists and the public an online resource for exploring the entire canyon in detail.

This canyon system on Mars, named Valles Marineris, stretches as far as the distance from California to New York. Steep walls nearly as high as Mount Everest give way to numerous side canyons, possibly carved by water. In places, walls have shed massive landslides spilling far out onto the canyon floor.

A simulated fly-through using the newly assembled imagery is available online athttp://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/mars/missions/odyssey/20060313.html. The fly-through plus tools for wandering across and zooming into the large image are athttp://themis.asu.edu .

"We picked Valles Marineris to make this first mosaic because it's probably the most complex, interesting feature on the entire planet," said Dr.

Don't be scared of digital

Question: I'm worried about the digital TV transition. Will digital-to-analog television signal converters be available? I heard the government would be helping out. Can you explain?

Answer: In February 2009, all television broadcasts will go digital. Owners of analog televisions will need a digital conversion box. Otherwise, you won't be able to receive over-the-air television signals. This issue only applies to those using an antenna. Converter boxes will be widely available before the transition. The government has a program to help. It's offering coupons to offset the cost of a converter box. You must apply for a coupon and can find a link to the program at www.tulsaworld.com/komandonews.

Q: You often mention the benefit of 802.11n over 802.11b and 802.11g.

Millennials learn ropes of cooperation

For 20 years, employers and employees have traipsed out to Garrett Creek Ranch in Wise County to mix, mingle and learn from each other.

Two decades of urban encroachment haven't invaded the ranch's 460 acres of pristine, rolling hills in the rural town of Paradise, Texas.

Corporate "residents" learn to play nice with each other while sitting on porch rockers or hanging from highline wires on a rope course.

GDC to become invitation only for press in '09

It can be hard if you're a writer who isn't with one of the larger sites like IGN or one of the more popular blogs like Joystiq: E3's going invitation-only last year meant many gaming writers were scrambling for their golden ticket, and the show had a much different feel from previous E3s Ars has attended. Last year the Game Developers Conference picked up the slack in many ways, but with so many stories coming out of the GDC, and so many press members there, were the actual developers able to do their job without being harassed by the press? During our interview with GDC Executive Director Jamil Moledina, we asked this questions, among others.

Moledina agreed that the press presence at GDC had been growing. "At GDC '07, there were around 1,000 press passes handed out, which for a 16,000-person show is quite a lot," he told Ars.
